Here's How Mars Retrograde Will Affect Your Sex Life This Summer

On June 26, Mars retrograde begins, which will last for roughly two to three months. So, unfortunately, your summer sex life may not look exactly like you hoped it would, but that doesn't mean that there aren't benefits from such occurrences. The planets are petty bonkers right now, as Teen Vogue reports, by the end of July, six planets will be retrograde: Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto, Neptune, and of course,Mercury retrograde arrives on July 26, no matter how much we all wish to escape it.

What (and when) is Mars retrograde, anyway?

When a planet goes retrograde, it appears to move backward in the sky. The planet doesn't literally change direction, but perception is important, so retrogrades affect us. That means that whatever the planet rules over, it's likely not the best time to expect support in these areas. Bluntly speaking, Mars retrograde means a lack of energy, low libido, disinterest in hitting the gym, and a general lethargy.

Since Mars is the warrior planet, it's associated with penetrative sexuality in astrology. While it's true that planets don't necessarily have genders, there actually was some astrology in the infamous 1992 dating book Men are From Mars, Women Are From Venus. Thus, Mars means aggression, action, and hot raunchy sex. (Mars was the God of War, after all.) When it's in retrograde, these things can be a little hard to come by.

A Mars retrograde might feel like a Mercury retrograde amped up a bit, so is not the most fruitful time to start a new job, sexual relationship, or anything that requires necessary and healthy action. You might feel lazy and lethargic, or like nothing is happening when it comes to cash and your sex life. You may feel stuck in a rut, wishing some hot warrior would come to rescue you — but they won't, because the ruling planet of warriors is busy retreating and taking a break from giving us power.

Mars retrograde officially began on June 26 and will end on August 27, so brace yourself for just over two months of this type of energy in your life.

Take this time to reflect.

All of this sounds like no fun — summers should be full of heat and adventure, after all. But remember that astrology is a magical and helpful guide, rather than a scientific rulebook set in stone, so don't let a retrograde squash your dreams. Plus, there are benefits to retrogrades. When a planet appears to go backward, while the direct action may be more complicated, it gives us crucial time for introspection. Consider such tough questions during this time: Is your sexual partner treating you right? Would they fight for you like a warrior? Likewise, are you getting paid your worth at work? Perhaps during Mars retrograde, you don't have the confidence to go to battle, but you can do some necessary preparation to get ready to fight for yourself.

Even though the areas of life ruled by the retrograde planet may be dialed down or feel out of sorts, a retrograde asks us to think about them. So rather than get bummed out that you're not getting enough dick or money and that you feel like a couch potato, remember that seasons change. Everything passes. There is a time to rest and a time for action. Retrogrades are also a wonderful excuse not to take anything personally, so if your sex life feels out of sorts, just blame it on Mars for the time being, and do some journaling to get in touch with what you want. And when you feel the call, go out and get it, warrior.
