Dizziness: Dr Sara gives tips for managing it at home

Most people have spells of dizziness and it’s not usually serious – it can be attributed to dehydration or heat exhaustion. However, recurring spells of dizziness can signal postural tachycardia syndrome (PoTS) – an abnormal increase in heart rate that occurs after sitting up or standing, explained Dr Sara on This Morning.
Dr Sara drew attention to PoTS after a caller rang up on This Morning explaining how the condition affects her daily life.
“PoTS can be really debilitating for a lot of people,” Dr Sara explained on This Morning.
Dr Sara confirmed that the caller was already receiving one medication and revealed that there are other medications that can help to reduce your heart rate too.
“Midodrine and fludrocortisone can both help but until you’ve got a formal diagnosis that’s probably why you haven’t been put on those medicines.”
Fortunately, there are things you can do at home to combat dizziness caused by PoTS and other conditions.
According to Dr Sara, if you’re starting to feel dizzy, lay down and put your legs up to improve the blood circulation.
She also said clenching your tummy and bum can help to “squeeze the blood back”.
In addition, wearing compression socks can help to cause the blood to rush back up the body, she added.
