The cause of back pain and sciatica can vary from person to person. In some cases, the cause of the pain is inflammation even without any disc compression. Anti-inflammatory medications are sometimes recommended for treatment. What you eat can also play a role in reducing inflammation in your body. Health experts advise the power of grapes in helping combat back pain.

Grapes contain an anti-inflammatory known as resveratrol and has been found to fight pain.

This compound tends to be concentrated mostly in the skins and seeds of grapes and berries.

Research published in the journal Spine, suggests that injecting the resveratrol, a compound that comes from the skin of grapes used to make red wine, could help.

The study found that resveratrol slows down the rate at which discs in the spine degenerate.

Dr Michael Levine from Chirocare said: “Grapes contain an antioxidant-like compound known as resveratrol, which helps to relieve back pain.

“It stops certain enzymes from contributing to tissue degeneration, he said.

“The breaking down of these tissues, particularly in the back, may instigate cartilage damage.

“It’s this cartilage damage that may lead directly to back pain.

“While your first thought to ease back pain might be to resort to pain medications and other over-the-counter solutions, back pain relief might be easier to find than you think.”

Back pain could be caused by sleeping in the wrong position, having bad posture, or even by having a minor injury.

In most cases, back pain isn’t anything to worry about, and it’ll get better by itself within a few weeks or months.

Lower back pain is a widespread problem, causing more global disability than any other condition.

Up to 80 percent of adults will experience low back pain at least once in their lives.

One study showed that mindfulness-based stress reduction improved back pain, said Medical News Today.

The health site added: “Mindfulness involves being aware of what the body is doing and using meditation techniques to assist with the pain.

“Progressive muscle relaxation is another method which involves tensing and relaxing muscles in the body, focusing on one muscle group at a time.

“Improper posture due to slouching or straining at a desk may cause back pain and other muscle aches.

“Using ergonomics to modify a workstation can help reduce pain due to poor posture.”

According to Bupa, these four simple steps can reduce the risk of getting back pain in the first place:

Exercise regularly. Walking, swimming or using an exercise bike are all things a person can do even if their back feels a bit sore. Take time to build up fitness if trying new activities.

When lifting objects, a person should bend their knees and hips, not their back.

Keep a good posture. If a person is at work at a desk/computer, make sure their chair, desk and computer screen are set up correctly.

A person may be able to have their workstation assessed by their employer.

Don’t stay in the same position for long periods of time.
