Matt Damon, Joe Manganiello Appear in Star-Studded MLB Stand Up to Cancer Promo

Matt Damon stands up with a poster saying “Dad.” Joe Manganiello’s says “Loved Ones.” In a video released today ahead of MLB’s Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C) placard moment, these stars are standing up and holding up the names of people in their lives who have been affected by cancer. They’re joined in the video by celebs Jordana Brewster, Uzo Aduba, Zachary Levi, and Candice Patton, who have all been affected by cancer in some way.

It’s part of a tradition that happens during the 5thinning of the All Star Game, baseball fans are encouraged to stand up with placards, in a moment of silence, that identify friends and other people they love who have been touched by cancer.

MLB has pledged more than $50 million to SU2C so far, and of course they’re encouraging you to do the same. But here’s why it’s not just another pitch for your bucks: Researchers have seen the number of deaths from heart disease go down and the number from cancer go up. One study predicted cancer to be the leading cause of death by 2020, although later science found that there are huge disparities in the data, depending on which groups of people you’re looking at. Economic status and differences in disease rates among racial and ethnic groups complicate the picture. But the point is, cancer is still a major concern, and needs major (league?) attention. Find out which cancers affect men the most, and discover the best strategies science has found so far on how to lower your risk.
