Bellybuttons are the latest body part on trend when it comes to a nip tuck.
According to Allure, plastic surgeons have noticed an uptick in the amount of patients interested in the finer details of stomach aesthetics.
“The belly button is a very important cosmetic feature of the stomach,” Darren Smith, a board-certified plastic surgeon in New York City, tells Allure. “I am seeing an increase in patient interest in belly button aesthetics.”
The procedure is formally known as umbilicoplasty and there are varying types available. Some women want to change their outie to an innie, some want to tighten their belly button if it’s been stretched by pregnancy or piercings, some want to make their’s bigger and for some, the redesign can be part of an entire tummy tuck.
“They are also interested in restoring their belly button after pregnancy, abdominal surgeries, and after large amounts of weight loss,” Melissa Doft, a board-certified plastic surgeon in New York City, told. Allure
But for a small number of women, the move is functional not fashionable.
“In rare cases, umbilical hernias can actually be painful and cause functional problems,” explains Smith.
If you needed a reminder, unless you’re suffering pain or discomfort all belly buttons are ideal just they way they are.
