January is almost here, and with it, a down-to-business attitude that comes straight from the sun’s visit to Capricorn. End-of-year festivities fade as vigorous new beginnings emerge, so wave goodbye to the shit show that was 2018, and say hello to the new year! Winter can be a time-crunch with kids (hello, darkness at 4 p.m. — we did not miss you), but only if you allow it to be. Your creativity will be crucial, and you’ll be grateful for some help from the cosmos.
“The solar eclipse that marks the new moon on the 5th will supercharge the sensation of starting over. Institute new winter routines, and say yes to all the activities that keep children busy, even if it means you must turn up your collar and put everyone in puffy coats first,” astrologer and empowerment coach Judi Vitale tells SheKnows. “The hyperactive planet Uranus will spin back into forward motion on the 6th, delivering the inspiration to do ‘something different’ as often as possible,” she adds.
“Venus will move into Sagittarius on the 7th, encouraging more group gatherings, which will peak when it cozies up to Jupiter’s exuberance on the 22nd,” Vitale says. Planning the parties can be as fun as throwing and going to them, so get the little ones involved in the preparations as much as possible. Just before that, on the 20th, the lunar eclipse and full moon will strike a major spark for any activities that involve creativity, leadership skills and a sense of drama.
By month’s end, you may even wonder how winter could possibly be going so fast. Don’t forget to take a moment to make those snow angels. But that’s not all. Read on to find out what the cosmos has in store for you and your little ones this January.
Aries: March 21 – April 19
You might start out the month feeling more frozen than the ground (did we skip fall this year entirely?), but if you open your heart to your family, everything will change for the better, and you’ll be everybody’s vote for mom of the year. “The quick fix for any nervousness you might feel is to release energy through solid physical activity,” Vitale tells SheKnows, so strap on those hiking boots and hit the trails. Don’t let unfriendly weather get in the way. “A walk in the woods, crunching through the snow with your children, could create a magical day-tripping experience on the 6th or the 21st,” Vitale says.
“If it works for you and your family, a long-haul trip could be in the offing by the 22nd,” advises Vitale. Can’t fit it into an already packed schedule or the budget? Visit a museum or cultural event that exposes the wonders of other parts of the world. Ethnic food feasts at home could also get five stars from the kitchen-island crowd.
“Your own career could play on your mind this month, and events you have no control over could create some changes in the work lineup. Luckily for you, adapting to the next and best thing is a no-brainer due to your pioneering spirit and eagerness to be the one to try everything first.” Vitale notes.
Taurus: April 20 – May 20
The phrase “work-life balance” could be more than just a cliché this month. “Eclipses will put huge halogens on your job and your home life, challenging you to parcel out your attention without losing touch with yourself in the process,” says Vitale. “It’s quite likely that you’ll be asked to either travel or undergo intensive work-related training,” she adds. Meanwhile, the demands of family life will tug at your heartstrings (as if it doesn’t every day already).
“Your protective nature is often mistaken for you being stubborn, but now it might be time for you to give in on an issue that isn’t as black and white as it seems,” notes Vitale. A good strategy might be to stay close to your brood for the early part of the month, possibly watching movies and reading books about a topic that truly touches all your hearts. Share the things that fuel your passion, and teach them how important it is to believe in their own dreams of success and achievement.
“After the 20th, house and home come into even more focus. You may consider a change of some kind,” Vitale explains. Looking for ideas? This change could be fresh floors or wall colors or even a discussion about acquiring a new address. Take deep breaths. Change can be good!
Gemini: May 21 – June 21
The year starts out romantic and sexy for you (bow-chicka-wow-wowwww…) “Both Mercury’s mental preoccupation and Venus’ flirty tendencies join the optimism of Jupiter in your house of relationship,” Vitale notes. It could be time for the kids to have a sleepover at Grandma’s while you and your honey escape for a weekend. “Pencil in the weekends of the 5th and 12th. Even a sweet dinner with the inviting ambience of the fire in your living room could recapture the passion you yearn for right now. You’re very clever, and you’ll think of something!” says Vitale.
Children will want to build their relationships now too. Go ahead and be that household everyone wants to visit for movie night or pizza time. “You’ll enjoy teaching young people the art of conversation and learning more about each of them as well. The example you offer to your small ones about human interaction and emotional intimacy will be priceless,” Vitale says.
“The eclipse on Jan. 20 could bring news, either from a neighbor or a friend, that makes you smile with pride,” she adds.
Check out the post-holiday sales for bargains on electronics and motor vehicles, but stick to buying only what really needs to be replaced. A repair job could make an old device run even better than it did when it was new.
Cancer: June 22 – July 22
You may have noticed an energy surplus as of late, and this month, it will fuel a flurry of active work and fun. “Your nurturing nature lends you a strong desire to be of service to others; but don’t forget to be good to yourself while you’re at it,” reminds Vitale. “Early in the month, the new moon will shake up your attitude toward all one-to-one relationships with powerful eclipse energy, while Uranus’ move forward will reveal new ways of seeing how much you matter to the rest of the world,” Vitale says.
Your role as motivator will be much needed at home. Winter doldrums are a fact of life, but they don’t have to take over yours. “Rather than convince or cajole, simply demonstrate by being active, engaged, cheerful and free. They’ll follow you out to the slopes, the rink or the snowshoe trail with nearly as much excitement as they flock to your kitchen for yummy comfort food,” suggests Vitale.
It will be time to pamper yourself by the last few weeks of the month, (hallelujah!) and Vitale tells SheKnows, “The full moon and eclipse in your house of earning and spending will give you permission to use part of a windfall for a treat you know you very richly deserve.” Mani-pedi anyone?
Leo: July 23 – Aug. 22
For you, a good New Year’s resolution might be to act in accordance with your needs and honor your limitations. “People tap on your vibrant energy supply constantly because they know you have your act together. Your energy’s not limitless, though, as you’ll find when the new moon and eclipse hits your house of health, vitality and daily activity on the 5th,” warns Vitale. The antidote? You may need to recharge, starting with your own exercise and dietary practices.
“With Venus and Jupiter in your house of recreation and parenting, spending time with your children will be even more fun than usual. Use this time to recharge your batteries and get them engaged in activities that teach the importance of doing things for themselves,” says Vitale. Although you have a soft side, your strong suit is finding out what your wee ones do best and bringing it out in them. They know it. They love you and appreciate your pride in their accomplishments.
“Relationships — particularly that special, loving one you relish — will take center stage after the full moon on the 20th. Renew your passion by dedicating time to simply enjoying one another’s company,” Vitale says. Prove to yourself and each other that being a family still leaves plenty of room for hearts, flowers and adult-type love.
Virgo: Aug. 23 – Sept. 22
“This year starts out with a burst of activity on your domestic scene. You’ll feel good about your home life but also might want to make changes,” observes Vitale. Renovations, redecorating and even moving, if they fit your needs, will go well now thanks to Jupiter’s enthusiasm and support. Just make sure you’re ready to deal with the disruptions that inevitably go along with big projects.
“You could notice big changes with your children when the eclipse hits early this month,” Vitale warns. “A growth spurt, either physical or emotional, can be jarring when you look at your ‘baby’ and notice she or he has become a miniature adult. You’ll need to adjust and deal with the fact that nothing can ever be totally perfect,” she adds.
“With Mars in your house of energy and health, you’ll be ambitious about your workouts and possibly overestimate your physical strength,” Vitale cautions. Beware and practice moderation. “Saturn will help you with that — and also when it comes time to give your children discipline. Start on the 2nd, when the sun helps you show them that doing the right thing can often be fun. Your loving partnership will reach romantic peaks around the 11th,” says Vitale. Make time to cuddle and coo with no kids within earshot.
Libra: Sept. 23 – Oct. 22
Welcome 2019 with open arms and a loving heart. “Pluto’s intensity will ensure domestic life continues to keep you busy and happily challenged. While eclipse energy will accelerate activity on the domestic front, you’ll be thrilled to know you won’t be left to go it alone. Planet Uranus’ reemergence will bring refreshing excitement in all your one-to-one relationships,” Vitale tells SheKnows. Old friends could come out of the woodwork, and new people could become a part of your life as well.
“Let Saturn’s organization ability keep you grounded and in touch with your desires,” she says. This could be an important time in your life for deciding what kind of impact you want to make in the world. A job change or shift in your career could provide new possibilities and help you achieve much-needed balance.
Children will test your patience when winter weather keeps you all confined to quarters. “Let Venus help you dust off your artsy chops and encourage your brood to create through painting, crafting, dancing and playing music,” suggests Vitale. You’ll keep them busy and give them the gift of an expressive outlet for developing emotions.
Scorpio: Oct. 23 – Nov. 21
It’s important to keep telling yourself to look at the bright side, notes Vitale, especially “now that you don’t have the happiness machine called Jupiter running at full throttle in your sign. There will be a focus on the way you present and express yourself thanks to eclipse energy and a stop-and-start sensation coming from Saturn and Pluto in your house of communication.” Make an effort to smile and laugh more.
“Children will be unpredictable and far less focused than you would prefer due to the dreamy influence of Neptune. A pea soup fog could really blur their vision around the 4th and the 11th. Do everything you can to make sure they’re getting enough rest and following a regular schedule. They’ll definitely try to push the envelope in every way you can imagine,” says Vitale.
“Money will flow nicely this month thanks to Jupiter’s generosity and Venus’ powers of attraction, both in your house of earning and spending. The temptation to treat yourself and everyone you know will be strong, but your will power won’t let you overshoot the budget. The eclipse on the 21st will help your family make a decision you can all live with,” Vitale notes.
Sagittarius: Nov. 22 – Dec. 21
Woo-hoo! “With your energy at an all-time high thanks to Jupiter’s visit to your sign, you’re ready to celebrate life like you haven’t done for the last 12 years. The eclipse on the 7th could bring a nice windfall or a source of earned income. Be careful, though, because there might also be some big bills coming in,” warns Vitale. The solution? “Tap on Saturn’s adult supervision and you’ll balance exuberance with prudence,” explains Vitale.
But it isn’t all fun and games. “Your wee ones could get quite fired up as Uranus’ powerfully erratic energy reemerges from a long rest,” cautions Vitale. It’s a good time to enroll them in activities that burn off energy. Skiing, skating, indoor soccer and hockey could all fit the bill and will give you a chance to show off your sports skills too.
“The travel bug could gnaw at you when the full moon eclipse hits on the 21st. If you can’t leave the country now, you might want to plan a future trip that will be educational as well fun for the whole family,” Vitale says. It’s also a good time to read more or even take up a course of study in an area that’s always caught your interest. Learning keeps you alive, so let your mind and your sense of adventure expand more every day.
Capricorn: Dec. 22 – Jan. 19
January feels good to you, and not just because it’s your birthday. You love it when people finally get back to business after the holidays. “You’ll be especially fervent in your attitude toward getting the job done, both at work and at home, due to the strong eclipse energy that hits your sign on the 7th. It’s an excellent time to start a project that could mark a turning point in your life,” Vitale says. Send out feelers about a new job or take the leap into a work-from-home enterprise.
“Your domestic life might get shaken up by unexpected visitors this month after planet Uranus gets back into action on the 6th and then again when it battles the sun on the 16th,” Vitale notes. These may be times when it’s best to merely ride the wave, however chaotic it might feel. Your children will appreciate your patience, *gasp,* especially when it comes to entertaining their friends.
“Romance will sparkle on from the 19th to 21st. The moon graces the house of you loving on your honey, and eclipse energy brings sexy back in big ways,” Vitale tells SheKnows. Create any excuse at all to get at least an evening away from playing your parental roles. Hand the kids off to Grandma. Celebrate your birthday by receiving well-deserved love and affection from all directions.
Aquarius: Jan. 20 – Feb. 18
It’s time to face up to your feelings, even though you might not want to pay so much attention to them. “Early month eclipse energy will push you to take inventory of what’s inside of you during the first week of the month. You may need solitude, at least for a day, and ideally for a weekend. Spend time understanding the difference between ‘alone’ and ‘lonely,’ and cultivate the pearls of wisdom that come to you in the meantime,” advises Vitale.
Once you’re sure about what you really want from your life, it will be easier to deal with all your relationships. “A surprise about your partnerships — from your honey to your clients, close friends or work cohorts — will arrive when the second eclipse comes on the 21st,” says Vitale. Find ways to state what is true for you while still being considerate of other people’s feelings. You tend to attract people who are highly sentimental and much more easily bruised than you will ever be.
“Go out of your way to participate in you little ones’ activities around the 16th and 17th,” Vitale suggests. Even though they might pretend they don’t see you, your presence will remain etched in their memories for decades.
Pisces: Feb. 19 – March 20
January is likely to be livelier than you like it to be, but at least all the madness will make the wintertime go faster. “Your full-time job will be to remain calm, even when it doesn’t seem there are enough hours in the day to get everything done. The eclipse energy will get you involved in group activities early in the month. Just when you thought you could rest after the holidays, you’re likely to discover you’re committed to one too many of those kinds of events that appeal to your altruistic nature,” warns Vitale.
“Jupiter will make you more visible in the community now and improve your prospects at work as well,” says Vitale. Opportunity is a great thing, but only if you can be selective about it. “At this point in time, the cosmos is testing your ability to be kind and firm at the same time. Use Mars’ ambition to help you look out for your own interests,” Vitale advises.
“A change in your daily routine is likely after the eclipse on the 20th. This could be a switch in your role at work or the arrival of a new coworker or staff member, even a new nanny or au pair,” Vitale says.
Your children could feel pulled toward their friends more than family just now. “Try to understand without allowing them to neglect the things they need to do at home, including getting enough rest. ‘Boundaries’ is your watchword now, and by showing that you have good ones, you’ll show your children how important it is for them to have theirs,” says Vitale.
