Five signs that you may have gum disease
Principal dentist Dr Jay Joshi, of MKDental, revealed the health horrors of brushing your teeth before breakfast and explained why brushing afterwards is the only way.
“If you don’t brush your teeth after breakfast, several oral health issues can arise,” warned Dr Joshi.
Eating breakfast can leave behind food particles and sugars in the mouth, which is exactly what bacteria in your mouth thrive on.
“These bacteria form plaque, a sticky film that can lead to tooth decay and gum disease if not removed,” explained Dr Joshi.
Plaque creates acids that can erode the tooth enamel, which can lead to cavities over time.

Furthermore, plaque irritates the gums, which can result in gum disease and bad breath.
“Food particles and bacteria left in the mouth after breakfast can contribute to bad breath,” certified Dr Joshi.
Getting into the habit of brushing your teeth first thing in the morning, before breakfast, could also contribute to tooth sensitivity.
Those who prefer to brush their time when having a shower, for instance, are discouraged from doing so.

By brushing your teeth after breakfast you can be sure that your oral health will be improved.
“If your breakfast includes acidic foods and beverages like orange juice, brushing after eating can help protect your teeth,” said Dr Joshi.
There is a caveat, however, as acidic foods can temporarily soften tooth enamel, so brushing is recommended at least 30 minutes after eating.
“Waiting about 30 minutes after eating allows your saliva to help neutralise acids and remineralise your teeth, reducing the risk of damage,” Dr Johsi explained.
Brushing after breakfast can also reduce tooth sensitivity and can help prevent you from snacking unnecessarily.
Dr Joshi elaborated: “Brushing your teeth after breakfast can create a psychological barrier against snacking between meals, which is beneficial for oral health.
“This can discourage impulsive eating and promote better meal planning.”
Ultimately, Dr Joshi said that the most crucial aspect of good oral hygiene is to maintain a consistent and thorough routine that includes brushing, flossing and regular dental check-ups.
