Health study suggests TV classics helps beat dementia

While many of us may groan in despair as the same old films are rolled out every year, they can actually be therapeutic for those with Alzheimer’s, health chiefs believe.

A study by NHS England has found that re-watching classic films stimulates memories for older people and keeps their brains active.

And, for the 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, watching classic films, like The Snowman, right, can prompt “emotional memories”

While they may not remember exact details, often they will recall how they felt at the end of the movie.

Rekindling these emotions lodged in the mind will help dementia sufferers connect with their loved ones watching with them, it is said.

Professor Alistair Burns, NHS England’s national clinical director for dementia, said: “People with dementia might find it hard to follow convoluted conversations amid the chaos and noise of Christmas and can end up feeling excluded.

“Gathering the family round to watch a much-loved classic film, play a family game or even sing along to a favourite carol can bring people together and help everybody feel part of the fun.”

He stressed that the social whirl of friends and families visiting during Christmas and the New Year can be unsettling and confusing for people with dementia.

To reduce this, families are advised to spread out the visits of house guests and be flexible with their plans. Professor Burns also urged people to look out for signs of dementia among older family members and friends over Christmas.

Kathryn Smith, the Alzheimer’s Society’s chief operating officer, said: “Whether it’s an old song they used to enjoy or a classic Christmas film, reminiscing can be beneficial to someone with dementia.

“It can help to maintain their self-esteem, confidence and sense of self, as well as improve their social interactions with others.

“However, every person with dementia is different, so it’s important to listen and accommodate your loved one’s unique needs and wishes.

“The Alzheimer’s Society’s website is a good place to go for expert support.”
