This Is How Often You Should Be Washing Your Bras, Expert Says

Bras are arguably the hardest working garment we wear, but it turns out we’re probably not giving them the TLC they deserve.

Jené Luciani, author of The Bra Book, told Apartment Therapy that contrary to popular belief, boulder holders should be washed after each use.

“You should wash your bras after every wearing, which is something a lot of women don’t realise!” she said.

The Aussie expert says that it’s not just about hygiene, regular scrubs help keep bras working like they should.

“Your bra accumulates a pretty hefty serving of sweat, grime, and elements from the air,” she explained, “Which can actually chip away at the longevity of your undergarment by affecting the elasticity and other materials.”

According to a recent study, only 4.5 percent of women actually do this. In fact, the survey of 1500 people found that the majority of European women wash their bras every two to four days (31.7%) followed by every one to two weeks (21.3%).

But before you sprint to the laundry to put every single bra you own through a cycle, not all experts agree.

“Over-washing can damage the elasticity, which is essential for providing the proper support,” says Lexie Sachs, product analyst in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab. “Every few wears should be sufficient, but it does depend on your activity level.”
