Victorian shooter Catherine Skinner won a gripping sudden-death final this morning to become Australia’s third gold medallist at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
After a sluggish start against Kiwi Natalie Rooney, Catherine, 26, showed nerves of steel to claw her way back, nailing the last three clay targets to win by just one shot.
It was Australia’s first Olympic shooting gold since Suzie Balogh won the same event in 2004.
Australia won just eight gold medals in London four years ago, but after a winning double in the pool on day one to add to the shooting glory, experts are tipping at least double that haul in Rio.
