Deaf man adopts deaf dog and teaches him commands with sign language

‘He is ALWAYS up for an adventure and is just an all around eager to please little man! He is working on mastering his hand signals and doing great! a very smart little man!’

Emerson was taken in my rescue centre NFR Maine and at eight weeks, he was fighting for his life.

He started having seizures and wasn’t able to eat or drink. He then developed the serious Parvo virus but his rescuers kept fighting to keep him alive.

Amazingly, Emerson recovered but his health meant that all his brothers and sisters were adopted but he was left behind – until Nick came along.

Speaking to WABI, Nick said: ‘He came straight to me at the door and sat right away at my feet and stayed there.

‘So you can tell he kind of picked me. And I knew right then and there that we would get along and understand each other pretty good.’

Although they can’t hear each other, Nick and Emerson are able to communicated.

Emerson sits when Nick signs the letter ‘S’ and he lies down on the floor when he signs a straight line.

Nick added: ‘The bond that we have is awesome. We understand each other very well. I’d like to think it was meant to be. He’s special.’
